A wild stream, a river… two strong characters!

A real link between the Pyrenees and the Atlantic, the Garonne has shaped the landscape but also the men and women of Occitania. With its capricious and wild side, it has taught the local people patience and respect for nature. Its legendary floods and its often difficult navigability command respect.

The Tarn has nothing to envy the Garonne. Once navigable up to the confluence, it was a major communication and commercial axis during the previous centuries.

With its 450 hectares, 29 of which are dedicated to water sports and leisure activities, the confluence of the Tarn and Garonne rivers at St Nicolas de la Grave is a 100% nature destination: mountain bike rides, picnic areas, arboretum, hiking, bird sanctuary, water sports, fishing and swimming pool… without forgetting the relaxation and games at the leisure centre

A meeting place for birds

The confluence of the Tarn and Garonne rivers is also an ornithological reserve, the largest in the South-West, renowned for the diversity of species that frequent it. The ornithological observatory on the banks of the Garonne, created and run by the Tarn-et-Garonne Natural Science Society, allows you to follow the evolution of migratory and sedentary birds that meet in this protected area.

Hiking ideas

Starting from the leisure centre, a hike in the valley allows you to discover the confluence of the Tarn and the Garonne. In this magnificent place, you will be able to appreciate and observe the various species of birds that inhabit the ornithological reserve. From here you will head towards the village of St Nicolas de la Grave, its castle and its arcades in the centre of town.
