Nestled between the verdant valleys of the Séoune and the Barguelonne, the medieval bastide of Castelsagrat awaits you for a journey through time. Founded in the 13th century, this charming town offers a unique historical and architectural richness that will captivate visitors from all walks of life.
At the center of the village, the central square is a true gem. Surrounded by arcaded galleries dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, it features a magnificent flower-covered well. These arcades are a testament to the typical medieval architecture of bastides, with their pointed arches that have stood the test of time.
Don't miss the fortified 14th-century church. It houses a sculpted wooden altarpiece from the 17th century, commissioned by the Saint Raymond College of Toulouse for its chapel.
Situated on the ancient Roman road known as the "Clermontoise," which connected Lyon to Bordeaux, Castelsagrat has always been a hub of commerce and exchange. Roman remains have been discovered at the site, such as mosaics and a marble bust of a woman. An immense and very deep well, built with small stone masonry and attributed to the Romans, is another wonder to discover.
Throughout its history, Castelsagrat has endured numerous invasions and conflicts, from the Alamanni to the Normans, including the Visigoths and the Saracens. However, the town was able to be reborn and prosper under the reign of Alphonse of Poitiers in the 13th century, who made it a thriving bastide with a charter in 1270. In 1271, Castelsagrat became a royal town, marking a flourishing period of medieval liberties and consular traditions.
