The Roman de Renart is a cycle of poems written in the Romance language, composed between around 1170 and 1250, and brought together during the 13th century. It appears as an animal epic, a parody of the chansons de geste and courtly romances that exalted chivalric society. It revolves around a central theme: the struggle between the goupil (the common name for fox in Old French) and the wolf Ysengrin, in other words, between cunning and brute force. The great popularity of this story meant that around 1250, the proper noun ‘renard’ (fox) became the common noun for the goupil (wolf). These adventures provide an opportunity for satirical stories to criticise society and human failings.
