7.30pm: ‘On fabrique, on vend, on se paie’ (cie Le bain collectif) > A history of the Lip factories! Besançon summer 1973. Following the takeover of the Lip factory, a redundancy plan is announced: they are ‘the 480 to go’. This marked the beginning of one of the most emblematic strikes of the end of the ‘Thirty Glorious Years’ for the workers of the factory, the jewel in the crown of the French watchmaking industry, and one that was to have an almost mythical echo in European workers' history. The ‘Lip conflict’ lasted until 1976, with workers organising themselves and seizing their watch-making equipment, which was then hidden and sold off on the open market...
It was also a struggle with its dark side, its ambivalence and an awareness of the condition of women workers, some of whom joined the feminist movement. ‘We've all seen that the worker is society's pariah, but the woman worker is the pariah of the workers’. The struggle, from the beginnings of single-sex meetings to the publication of a women's Lip magazine, is a struggle within the struggle.
Perfectly documented and written, the show ‘We make, we sell, we pay’ begins with the sad end of the conflict and then immerses us in the history of Lip, from its general meetings to the great march of 29 September 1973, at the heart of their battle.
